#### **Six-month paid internship**

At Forward Action, we help progressive organisations build people power through digital mobilisation. We work with charities, campaign groups and social movements to develop campaign strategies, create compelling content, build movements and raise millions of pounds for good causes.

We’re looking for two interns to join us for six months.

This isn’t an internship where you’ll spend your time making tea, taking notes or sitting on the sidelines. You’ll become part of our team, receive structured training, contribute to real partner work and have the opportunity to lead a project of your own.

We know that many groups remain underrepresented within the charity and campaigning sector. As part of our commitment to building a more representative workforce, we particularly encourage applicants from Black, Asian or other minoritised ethnic backgrounds, and people who identify as working class or have done so in the past.

Our internships are designed with three goals in mind:

- to create high-quality paid training opportunities for people who have historically faced barriers to entering our sector
- to support our partners by contributing to real partner work
- to generate learning that we can share with the wider campaigning community.

#### **What you’ll do**

Your internship will be split into two rotations.

#### **Creative (approximately three months)**

Working alongside our Creative team you’ll learn how ideas become campaigns.

You might:

- help develop creative concepts for campaigns
- write copy for emails, social media and digital campaigns
- create and edit organic social content
- spot trends and bring platform insights into creative discussions
- help research and identify creators and influencers for campaign partnerships
- contribute ideas in creative workshops and brainstorming sessions
- analyse how creative work performs and suggest improvements.

#### **Strategy (approximately three months)**

Working alongside our Strategy team you’ll learn how campaigns are planned, delivered and evaluated.

You might:

- undertake audience and campaign research
- support strategy development
- analyse campaign data and produce reports
- set up and manage paid social campaigns
- help prepare workshops and presentations
- attend partner meetings
- contribute to campaign planning
- support project management and delivery.

Throughout the internship you’ll also have opportunities to:

- work across different teams within the agency
- attend creative workshops and partner meetings
- learn about digital fundraising and campaigning tools
- develop presentation and facilitation skills
- build understanding of how the third sector operates

Alongside your day-to-day work, you’ll lead a supported project in an area you’re passionate about. This might be developing a new social media approach, researching emerging platforms, testing creator partnerships or another area of mutual interest. You’ll shape this project with your manager during your first few weeks.

**By the end of the six months our aim is that you leave with:**

- a portfolio of work you’re proud of
- experience working with leading campaigning organisations
- confidence contributing to strategy and creative discussions
- a strong understanding of digital mobilisation
- a network of people across the sector
- practical support to help you secure your next role.

#### **What we’re looking for**

This is a learning role. We don’t expect you to have worked in a charity, agency or campaigning organisation before.

We’re much more interested in your curiosity than your CV.

This internship programme is part of our commitment to Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion principles so we particularly encourage applications from those underrepresented in our sector, specifically those from Black, Asian or other minoritised ethnic backgrounds, and people who identify as working class or have done so in the past.

We are a remote-first organisation so welcome applications from people all over the UK. We think in-person time is key to successful learning, so will expect those working from outside London to be able to travel to our office in Hackney once a month to meet with the team in person. We would cover expenses.

In terms of personal qualities, we’re looking for people who:

- are fascinated by how people communicate online
- want to help build campaigns for a fairer society
- spend time on social media and understand different online communities
- notice digital trends before other people do
- enjoy asking “why did that work?”
- have creative ideas and enjoy solving problems
- communicate clearly and thoughtfully
- are organised and keen to learn

We know digital expertise doesn’t only come from work.

You might have built it by creating content, moderating online communities, running an account, making videos, following creators, gaming, participating in fandoms, making memes, or simply spending lots of time online and paying attention.

We’d love to hear about that.

#### **What you’ll learn**

We’ll co-produce a learning plan with you at the beginning of the internship based on your interests and goals.

You’ll receive structured learning in areas including:

- digital campaigning strategy
- creative development
- copywriting
- paid and organic social
- creator partnerships
- digital advertising
- audience research
- project management
- partner communication
- campaign reporting and evaluation
- presentation skills.

You’ll also receive regular mentoring, feedback and support throughout the programme, together with help preparing for your next role once the internship finishes.

#### **Salary and benefits**

- London Living Wage (or UK Living Wage outside London)
    - Those living outside London would be expected to travel to our office once a month for in-person days. We would cover these costs.
    - This will be a training allowance so you will not pay tax on your income
- Additional travel support for interns living outside London
- 30-hour, four-day working week
- Remote-first working with regular in-person team days
- Structured learning programme
- Mentoring from across the Forward Action team

#### **How to apply**

If you have any questions about the internship before applying, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Berry and Krystal by emailing <internship@forwardaction.uk>

Then when you’re ready please send a 1-2 page CV plus a covering letter answering the five questions below to <internship@forwardaction.uk>. **Deadline is midnight on Sunday 9 August**. We’ll shortlist that week and aim to have interviews 17 and 18 August. Don’t worry if you’re not available then, we can make alternative arrangements!

**Questions to answer.** Please limit your replies to a maximum of 500 words per question, though there is absolutely no need or expectation for you to write that much:

- Why are you interested in this internship and what do you hope to gain from it?
- Tell us about a digital campaign, a social post, piece of content, or online action that you think was particularly effective. Why do you think it worked?
- What experiences and skills do you have that you think would help you in this role? You could talk about previous job experiences, academic work, volunteering, student societies, social media, campaigning, blogs, personal projects, or something else
- If you could lead a project on any digital campaigning topic during your six months with us, what would it be and why?

Thanks so much and we really look forward to hearing from you!
